Gum Arabic
Commonly known as Acacia gum, Gum Arabic is harvested from the Acacia tree which commonly grows in the gum belt of Africa, which is located between Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east.
Sudan was producing up to 80 % of the worlds production of gum Arabic in previous times, but even though that figure has dropped, Sudan is still the worlds biggest sole producer of the product.
There are two types of trees:
• Acacia Senegal: produces Hashab type (darker in color and commercially considered as the first or clean grade)
• Acacia Seyal: Used for producing Talha type (lighter in color and commercially considered as the second grade)
Primarily used in food industries, but is known to be used globally in various industries ranging from paint and cosmetics industries to pharmaceutical and drug producers.
